TWELVE THURSDAYS

31 08 2007

I was meant to pretentiously post this excellent new remix of New York’s psych-trance poppers Asobi Seksu by Rio De Janiro’s The Twelves on Thursday, oh well there’ll be another time.

The Twelves, aka J.Mig and Matuto, we’re an total unknown quantity to me until and I checked the inbox and there was an awesome M.I.A remix sitting there, if you haven’t got the duo’s remix of ‘Boys’ get it from a previous post [here]. Expect big things of The 12’s.

mp3: asobi seksu - thursday (the twelves remix).

WHEN YOU’RE LONELY BABY

31 08 2007

The new single from Roisin Murphy ‘Let Me Know’ will be released October 8th, followed by the long awaited album ‘Overpowered’ on October 15th.

Co-written and produced by Andy Cato of Groove Armada and mixed by Dan Carey (Kylie, Sly & Robbie, CSS, Lily Allen) it’s pure retro pop-disco and Roisin apparently took inspiration for it from her performance at Danny Krivit’s 718 Sessions in New York last year.

The release will feature a remix from Andy Cato, a couple of remixes from Joey Negro, plus a Paul Oakenfold reworking of the album track ‘Cry Baby’, hear them at the remix myspace page.

Two collaborative efforts with Calvin Harris and Cathy Dennis didn’t make the album, much to Calvin’s publicised annoyance, who called Roisin a ‘twat’ in one interview - it’s how you deal with your disappointments that counts - anyway, here’s one the tracks (thanks dj).

mp3: roisin murphy - let me know.
mp3: roisin murphy - off and on.

DO YOU DO KUDU?

31 08 2007

When Brooklyn’s Kudu, singer Sylvia Gordon and beat maker Deantoni ‘D’ Parks, released their album ‘Death Of The Party’ last year through Nublu, their sprawling diy/kitchen sink approach was embraced by some, although it didn’t go down too well in more conventional music-journo circles, basically because they didn’t get it, so screw ‘em.

The duo’s brand of hedonistic, voodoo lounge, synth rock is a nice mix of early Siouxsie-era goth, 70’s funk, dark 80’s Chicago House and 90’s UK Jungle that comes together to bring a great leftfield pop sound. From the album, here’s ‘Suite Life’, along with a pumpernickel funk remix of ‘Boom Boom’ by ddpesh.

mp3: kudu - suite life.
mp3: kudu - boom boom (ddpesh remix).

BREAK ME WITH YOU

31 08 2007

Here’s a couple of older remixes from breakbeat daddies Stanton Warriors that appeared on the recent Skint remix compilation, imaginatively titled ‘Remixes’.

Featuring reworkings of 15 tracks from artists such as Apollo 400, Basement Jaxx, Tim Deluxe, Chicken Lips and Gorillaz, it’s well worth picking up. Here’s the bleepy Cosmos remix and the nicely cool Fatboy Slim reworking.

mp3: cosmos - break me with you (stanton warriors remix).
mp3: fatboy slim ft. macy gray - demons (stanton warriors remix).

ROCK ‘N’ ROLE

30 08 2007

image: silvertje

‘Solta O Frango’, which literally translates into ‘Release The Chickens’ but which means something different, by baile funkers Bonde Do Role (who we’re surprisingly on the Rolling Stone ‘10 Artists To Watch’ list) came out a while ago, but following the tracks inclusion in the recent Nokia ad campaign Domino are re-releasing it on September 3rd.

This time out it’s backed by a Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya remix and Ladytron remix [here], which proves people in marketing and advertising have their uses, but as Bill Hicks said, they should still probably all kill themselves - only joking I studied A & M.  As a bonus, here’s the crunky Crookers remix of ‘Gasolina’, meet me after school and I’ll beat you like gorilla.

mp3: bonde do role - solta o frango.
mp3: bonde do role - gasolina (crookers crunk remix).

THUNDER SNATCH

30 08 2007

More music acts should have Thunder in their name, with the exception of denim clad poodle-rockers ‘Thunder’ and the laughable ‘Alabama Thunder Pussy’ it’s definitely under-utilised.

This is where Canadian duo Thunderheist come in, the Urban Dictionary describes Thunderheist as ‘the act of stealing ones thunder conveniently turned into a one word verb’ as in ‘you just got thunderheisted, bitches’.

Isis (words) and Grahm (beats) have been getting plenty of attention on the club scene and Diplo’s apparently a fan, but they’ve been getting little mention on the blogscene (read an interview here), although that looks all set to change.

Here’s the Eurythmics sampling ‘Suenos Dulces’ and the dirty ‘Jerk It’.

mp3: thunderheist - suenos dulces.

mp3: thunderheist - jerk it.

BRAZILIAN WAX

30 08 2007

Eclectic house-rockers Brazilian Girls are neither Brazilian (try NYC) nor all-female, but that doesn’t mean anything. They’re we’re signed to Verve in 2005 and are well worth checking out if you haven’t already. The bands latest release is the EP ‘More Than Pussy’, which is basically a collection of past remixes along with a great cover of Talking Heads ‘Crosseyed and Painless’. You can get that track and more from the Brazilian Girls site.

The MSTRKRFT remix of ‘Jique’, which has been released as a single this week, is from back when the duo we’re on-point and is worth tracking down. Here’s a nice remix by tech main man Carl Craig and the dancehall flavoured armsofgandhi remix featuring Mr.Vegas.

mp3: brazilian girls - last call (carl craig remix).
mp3: brazilian girls ft. mr.vegas - pussy (armsofgandi remix).

COCAINE COOKED THE BRAIN

29 08 2007

This great Guns ‘N’ Bombs remix is on the flip of Nico Vega’s ‘Cocaine Cooked The Brain’ 7” which you can get from iamsound. The video comes courtesy of Demon Babies.

YOU’VE COME HOME

29 08 2007

Arguably the best track from the album ‘Out Of The Woods’ by Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn is ‘Grand Canyon’ and although there are no concrete plans for a release, I’d bet my bollocks that it’s the next single, judging from all the remixes that have been going around.

Ada gives the track a pretty amazing reworking and King Unique stretch the whole thing out into a ten minute epic.

GLASS CANDY

29 08 2007

Glass Candy, otherwise known as producer Johnny Jewel and singer Ida No, have been around for some time now but I’m criminally late to the game because their brand of new wave, downtempo, 70’s psychadelic space disco is a bit special. Pitchfork don’t rate them anyway, which makes them fine by me.

Here’s three gems from the duo: the blissed out euro-wave of ‘Candy Castles’, which uses a familiar horn sample, the summer space-soul of ‘Rolling Down The Hills’ and the Isaac Hayes/Geto Boyz/Iko Iko sampling of ‘Geto Boys’.

Also, over at the fan run Crystal Migraine you can pick up some of their earlier demo’s and you can buy their releases at Troubleman.

WE ARE ALL CROOKERS

28 08 2007

I couldn’t resist posting the best ‘Salmon Dance’ remix out of the current bunch - the one by Crookers. Plus it gives me the opportunity to post the excellent remix of the recent Adam Sky (Adamski) reworking of ‘We Are All Prostitutes’, which was originally a track by UK post punkers The Pop Group (thanks Nathan).

The original adamski reworking appears on Shir Khan’s excellent 2 disc release Maximize!, out through Exploited.

Also, at Crookers MySpace you can pick up their remix of Steel Lord’s ‘Dirty Muthafucka’ for nada, nish, niente, nothing, if you haven’t already.

SIOUXSIE - INTO A SWAN

28 08 2007

RUDE HEALTH

28 08 2007

Los Angeles experimentalists Health make some nice, trippy dance-rock noise. They’ve recently completed a tour of some of the UK’s finer small establishments and if you went you could pick up their 7” split with 8-bit thrashers Crystal Castles. You can buy it at Lovepump Unlimited.

Health are due to set of on a 40 date US tour shortly in support of their eponomyous debut album, which is set for a September 18th release and which you can pre-order from insound.

From the album here’s ‘Triceratops’, plus a great remix from Montreal ‘morlocks’ CFCF and New York’s Curses! get on the dancefloor with ‘Perfect Skin’.
