DRTY DANCING

31 10 2007

handzup.jpg

Here’s another great track from Dr Drt himself Shane Fontane, who seems to be knocking them out at some rate lately, and who describes ‘Putch Yo Handz Up’ as ‘kinda like percussive techno with some backspin top rockin’ funk’ which is spot on.

A special bonus prize of being a smart ass goes to anyone who knows what movie the picture is from.

MAKE IT HOT

31 10 2007

samim.jpg

I could’ve said something mildly amusing/annoying/delete as applicable/ about this picture but I think it speaks for itself.

‘Heater’ by Samim was obviously massive this summer and it’s finally got a release now that it’s cold, which might take a bit away from the track, but we all enjoyed it anyway. Out now on Data Records, it comes backed by a Claude VonStroke remix and this sharp reworking by yer man Diplo.

mp3: samim - heater (diplo remix).

HELL IS FOR HEROES

31 10 2007

the-freelance-hellraiser3.jpg

The Freelance Hellraiser took inspiration for his name from the passport of Oliver Reed (in which the sadly departed professional bad boy rightly listed ‘Hellraiser’ as his occupation), and achieved notoriety back in 2001 with the Christina Aguilera/The Strokes mash-up ‘A Stroke Of Genius’, a track which received wide attention and recently came in at #78 in Blender magazines best records of the last 25 years.

Following remixes for the likes of Richard Ashcroft, Christina Aguliera and Placebo, plus a stint as Paul McCartney’s official tour dj, last years debut album ‘Waiting For Clearance’, featuring guest spots from Harald Faltermeyer and Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol, was well received and saw Freelance Hellraiser shake off the mash-up tag for good, although I’ve just mentioned it.

More recently he turned in an excellent remix for goth high priestess Siouxsie’s second single from her debut solo album ‘Mantaray’-  the boombastic, vengeful ‘Here Comes That Day’-  which Mr. Hellraiser has described as ‘kind of Smith n Hack meet MSTRKRFT in a dark tunnel somewhere in Hamburg’.

As a bonus, here’s a fantastic reworking of ‘Supa Bajo’ by Lalula - the song used for the current Bacardi commercial - which is guaranteed to rock your socks and has received the remix treatment from Ashley Beedle, South Central and Emperor Machine. Check out the Freelance Hellraiser myspace page for some great blog entries too.

GRAVEYARD SMASH

30 10 2007

misfits_feature_main1.jpg

Because it’s Hallow’een tomorrow and because I love The Misfits, I couldn’t let this one go. New York’s Cousin Cole has reworked the Flufftronix remix of the seminal punkers track ‘Halloween’ and it works well.

Hallow’een is a particularly busy time of year for me and I’m increasingly finding it difficult to juggle work commitments with the yearly efforts of putting razor blades into candy, lacing fizzy drinks with bleach and tainting bank notes with hazardous chemicals, not to mention all the preparations for the usual blood ritual sacrifices.

mp3: the misfits- halloween (cousin cole vs flufftronix remix).

SCION REMIX PROJECT

30 10 2007

Car manufacturer Scion continues it’s successful audio/visual marketing association with ‘The Scion Remix Project’ which see’s five digital singles from five record labels get released today.

For Strictly Rhythm the Armand Van Helden classic ‘Witch Doktor’ gets the remix treatment from Deadmau5 project BSOD.

The Vice Records release features the rocking ’Goblin City’ by Panthers, plus a nine minute analog disco reworking from Brooklyn’s excellent DFA/The Juan Maclean affiliated Holy Ghost!

While on the Ninja Tune/Big Dada side of things ‘Telephone’ by French rappers TTC  gets remixed by Montreal’s Ghislain Poirier, and Modeselektor remix the Ghislain Poirier beepy ragga stylings of Blazin’.

mp3: panthers - goblin city.
mp3: ghislain poirier ft. face-t - blazin’.

PUNX MUSIC

30 10 2007

young-punx.jpg

This newie by The Young Punx, from the album of the same name, has just been released and features this pretty nice reworking from Don Diablo. The 12” also features a remix from Olav Basoski which you can pick up at Phase 02.

The artwork probably won’t appeal much to sufferers of Coulrophobia, a condition for which there’s no definitive explanation, although some theories have suggested the inability to distinguish clown emotions might have something to do with it.

P Diddy has a ‘no clowns’ clause written into his contracts, and I know some people who were genuinely terrified as children by ‘Pennywise’ from the movie ‘IT’ and it’s stuck, although Ronald McDonald is infinitely more terrifying for other reasons.

mp3: young punx - your music is killing me (don diablo remix).

TRICKY DECISIONS

29 10 2007

audio.jpg

The ‘Flickery Vision’ ep by London duo Audio Bullys, probably best known for the track ’Shot You Down’ with Nancy Sinatra, was put out earlier this month to coincide with the tour of Holland and Belgium of the same name.

The lead track is a sleazy grinder from Tom Dinsdale with the usual vocals stylings of Simon Franks over the top and the EP also contains the more upbeat ’Let Me Be’ which is well worth tracking down.

mp3: audio bullys - flickery vision (ep version).

DOM N SHERRI

29 10 2007

The video for the Matthew (Audion) Dear track ’Dom N Sherri’ was put out last week and it’s pretty special as a result of directors Judy Welfare and Jeremy Hollister using a five camera rig and mirrors to create the layered effects.  The single is out now and it’s backed by heavyweight remixes from Hot Chip and M.A.N.D.Y.

ROBOTS REFLECTION

29 10 2007

man_versus_robot__by_jesskajuice.jpg

Three robot reworking for the beginning of the week. Cirez D and The Beastie Boys collide on a bootleg courtsey of Axwell, eighties survivors Duran Duran get put through the blender by Sebastian Leger, and Sinden noises up The Elektrons from a while back.

mp3: cirez d vs axwell - intergalactic tigerstyle.
mp3: duran duran - falling down (sebastien leger remix).
mp3: the elektrons ft. eska - dirty basement (sinden remix).

NUMBER TOOP

28 10 2007

cassius12.jpg

Here’s a couple of Cassius remixes that you might not have. ‘Rock Number One’ gets a relaxed remix courtsey of Mexico City dj/producer Bufi, who’s given the track a pretty great understated feel, while keeping with the original structure and vocals.

New York’s Streetlab give ‘Toop Toop’ distorted vocals and some funky guitar riffery, head over to the myspace page for some more remixes of Nine Inch Nails and The Chemical Brothers.

mp3: cassius - rock number one (bufi remix).
mp3: cassius - toop toop (streetlab remix).

MORNING HERO

28 10 2007

4hero.jpg

‘Play With The Changes’, the fifth long player from London electronic soul duo 4hero came out at the beginning of the year to wide critical acclaim, and from it this single, featuring the sublime vocals of Carina Andersson, was released a couple of weeks back.

Daddy G from Massive Attack adds the beats and makes it moody, get a smooth house mix from Analog Giant.

mp3: 4hero - morning child (daddy g massive attack remix).

DEAD SOULS

28 10 2007

ryder1.jpg

Winona is the new project of soundtrack supremos Craig Armstrong and Scott Fraser and their aim is to produce ‘glacial European pop music’, I’m not entirely sure what that is, but if it sounds like this it’s pretty great.

Atmospheric moodiness with a nice dose of melody is the order of the day here and this stuff is well worth investigating. A recently released ep features a remix by Dead Soul Brothers on the A Side - which is another project by the busy Herve - and as you’ve come to expect, it’s a dancefloor bomber. Get the vinyl here.

mp3: winona - without you (dead soul brothers remix).

UNDERGROUND PRO

26 10 2007

nfsup.jpg

If you’ve been paying any attention to my inane babble lately, you might have picked up on the fact that I’m quite excited about the impending release of Need For Speed Underground : Pro Street.

Suffice to say it looks like being a lot of fun and those gentlemen at EA have had their ears to the ground in terms of what’s actually happening on the music scene, so the soundtrack is a pretty lively selection (the inclusion of Doncaster electro punks Neon Plastix deserves a special mention) that will only obviously only add to the game-play.

Someone said to me that hearing some of your favourite tracks on repeat play might water down your enthusiasm for the music after a while, and there is the danger of that happening, but with a play-list thirty two deep it’ll take some time, and by then you should have nailed the game.

From the soundtrack here’s a light Datarock remix and the classic rocky Peaches reworking by Tommie Sunshine, which you’ll never grow tired of hearing.

mp3: datarock - i used to dance with my daddy (karma harvest mix).
mp3: peaches - boys wanna be her (tommie sunshine’s brooklyn fire re-touch).
