SHAKE AND POP

30 11 2007

shabba_doo_too.jpg

This track by Chicago’s Curtis Jones aka Green Velvet originally saw a release some eighteen months back, then a remix package came out about a year ago and now it’s out again on a 12” out through Relief US.

It got enough attention on it’s release, but certainly not the attention it deserved, so maybe that’s the thinking behind it, that and it’s a stone cold electro-tech Chicago classic. DJ Sneak gives the track a nice house flavour.

mp3: green velvet ft. walter phillips - shake and pop.

HYPER CRUSH

30 11 2007

Hyper Crush’s latest ‘Slow Motion’ is some nice fifties doo-wop, technotronic, hipster hop from the eighties.

MYSTERY FLAKES

30 11 2007

mysteryjets2.jpg

How many Mystery Jets can you fit inside a phone box? I’d confidently say all of them and their Dad, although Henry Harrison is actually in band, which obviously always gets mentioned.

Here’s the first track from the bands new album sessions with Erol Alkan at the helm and it’s an epic sounding song with a nice retro vibe and some deep, rounded production that’s guaranteed to both warm you up and chill you out on a wintry night.

Failing that, you could always dance to this La Riots remix, who’ve also made Kylie sound pretty fantastic with their remix of ‘Boombox’.

mp3: mystery jets - flakes.
mp3: mystery jets - diamond in the dark (la riots remix).

CRIMINAL COWBELL

29 11 2007

villians.jpg

Don’t let the ignorant and uninformed tell you that this is a bad time for ‘dance’ music, whatever that is, just look at the emerging home grown talent and at what’s been coming out of Europe, Canada, Brazil, Australia and the States.

LA’s Villians have been getting plenty of rightful hype from Missing Toof, Big Stereo, GWFA, Panda Toes and Redthreat lately and they’re part of the new breed of US producers who’ve got to grips with the electro thing and totally tore it up.

Check Missing Toof for more villainous wickedness and here’s a Daft Punk reworking. Daft Punk, Diplo and Britney in one day? I’m definitely going to hell.

mp3: daft punk - around the world (villians more cowbell dj edit).

DOUBLE DIPLO

29 11 2007

diplo-large061107.jpg

So, we all know that Rye Rye is killing it at the moment and here’s the Diplo produced ‘Wassup Wassup,’ you’ll probably also notice that it’s very similar to ‘The Motherfucking Rave Is Over’ by Pase Rock, and that’s two for the price of one where I come from.

mp3: rye rye - wassup wassup.
mp3: pase rock - the motherfucking rave is over.

SENSUAL SEDUCTION

29 11 2007

Doggy Dogg is bringing the old school heat in the video for his latest single ‘Sensual Seduction’, taken from the album ‘Ego Trippin’, out early next year.

FREAKY DEAKY

29 11 2007

britney-bw-c10-15a-2_sm3.jpg

‘Hello is that room service? I know it’s late but it’s Britney…bitch in room 666 and I’d like two speedballs and a couple of bottles of jack daniels.’

Damn, I wish I could leave Britney alone because she’s only been partying and her new album ‘Blackout’ is a great pop effort. Furthermore ‘Freakshow’ is actually a pretty fine dubstep-lite tune that should be the next single.

mp3: britney spears - freakshow.

JUST A TOUCH

29 11 2007

estelle.jpg

The remixes keep on rolling from Sinden and Herve and here’s one for London rapper Estelle’s recently released single - check out the original in a live performance here.

Just to add to the ever expanding genre pool this is apparently ‘trance-garage’, which sounds good to me and here it is at 160kbps.

mp3: estelle - wait a minute (just a touch) (count of monte cristal and sinden remix).

PROFESSOR MURDER

29 11 2007

pmurder5.jpg

Head over to RCRDLBL for a the first of three free mp3’s from Brooklyn based Professor Murder. ‘Flex-It Formula’ is from their ‘Professor Murder On A Desert Island’ EP and it’s a jaunty slab of genre-bashing drummy electro-skank punk that’ll get you moving. There’s a whistle in there somewhere too, we need more whistles.

ROUGH JUSTICE

28 11 2007

justice-dance.jpg

So, this remix has been posted on other blogs before, plus I’m criminally late with this, and it’s a Justice post so I’ll probably be consigned to Satan’s sweaty coal bunker for this one, but I like a challenge.

D.A.N.C.E is obviously one of the biggest tunes of the year and it’s been remixed by virtually everyone, this Stuart Price (LRD/Jacques) remix is being re-issued soon for the end of year parties.

mp3: justice - d.a.n.c.e (stuart price remix).

SEE AND HEAR

28 11 2007

siapic.jpg

Following on from yesterdays Sia post, here’s her latest with a touch up from Lifelike. You pretty much know what to expect before you’ve heard it, but the big melodies and lush synth washes combined with Sia’s fantastic voice doesn’t disappoint.

mp3: sia - day too soon (lifelike remix).

IT’S ONLY ROCK N ROLL

28 11 2007

remi-nicole-by-helen-boast.jpg

image:helen boast

London singer songwriter Remi Nicole does a nice line in inoffensive, sun tinged compositions and she’s been getting plenty of media attention lately.

She was just about to support a very wobbly looking Amy Winehouse on her few remaining dates of the year which have now been scrapped on ‘doctors orders’. That was turning into a bit of a freak show anyway because people (and journalists) were turning up just to see if Winehouse flipped out, such is life.

Remi’s previous singles have received the remix treatment from Cansei de Ser Sexy, Kissy Sell Out, Punks Jump Up and Pilooski and her latest single ‘Rock N Roll’, which isn’t very rock n roll, but there are a couple of good remixes to be found again, most notably from The Showbiz Kids and this jackin’ reworking by Lee Mortimer.

mp3: remi nicole - rock n roll (lee mortimer remix).

YOUTH CREW’S BACK

27 11 2007

cadence2.jpg

image: el daverino
Edmonton’s Rollie Pemberton is back shortly as Cadence Weapon with his follow up to 2005’s ’Breaking Kayfabe’.  As Pitchfork explain Pemberton was ahead of the game and anticipated hip hop producers current trend for incorporating euro-electro tracks into the mix when he mashed up Rick Ross’s ‘Hustlin’ with ‘Hustler’ by Simian Mobile Disco.  They continue that A-Trak released his own version of the self same blend and then Kanye did the ‘Stronger’ thing, although they’ve neglected to mention Mehdi, Spank Rock, Plastic Little and the fact that Busta Rhymes sampled Daft Punk too.

Anyway, I’m a hypocrite because I don’t like getting pulled up for post inaccuracies, but  you get the idea.  As you’d expect he’s hit the current trend right on the head and ’In Search of The Youth Crew’ will sit comfortably alongside most tracks of the style out at the moment, and it’s a good indication of what to expect from next years long player ‘Afterparty Babies’.

mp3: cadence weapon - in search of the youth crew.
