COOL FOR CATS

Keeping on the DFA vibe here’s ’Goblin City’ by Panthers given an analog disco workout courtesy of Holy Ghost! aka New York natives Nicholas Millhiser and Alexander Frankel.

The duo might have first caught your attention as Automato (remember them?) or more recently as touring and recording members of The Juan Maclean. Their own 12” entitled ‘Hold On’, which is a smooth piece of vocal disco, has just been released at the end of last month and is well worth picking up.

Clocking in at just over nine minutes, this is a fat slab disco goodness that builds up and slays you halfway through with one of the sweetest guitar licks I’ve heard in a long time. Beyond recommendation, get it here or from Vice Records.

HANDY SHANDY

There’s nothing like the touch of a loving hand, but if you’re sans partner/single then you might find yourself returning to the old wanking spanners.  Woody Allen once famously said ‘don’t knock masturbation…it’s sex with somebody you love’ but he married his wife’s daughter so any sex education from the professional neurotic should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, which sounds painful.

I digress, as well as producing with David Holmes and James Lavelle, and being the other half of LCD/DFA that isn’t James Murphy, Tim Goldsworthy also turns out some strikingly good remixes under the Loving Hands moniker and his recent remix of ’To The Sky’ by ethereal indie rockers Maps continues the form.

He’s obviously a busy guy and he’s at the desk for the hotly anticipated Cut Copy album, which might explain why it’s taking so long, so for the time being here’s a couple of remixes that you might not have. ’Binary Love’ from northern rockers The Rakes eponymous debut got the Loving Hands treatment for a remix ep that came out at the end of last year, and it subsequently appeared on the Modular compilation ‘Leave Them All Behind 2′.

The second reworking is of oddly named Aussie odd-balls Dappled Cities Fly, which was made available on the bands myspace page a few months back, and which has some very nice bass action running through/over it. Pick up more Loving Hands goodness in the form of a Radio 4 remix, from a previous post here

RAW ON THE FLOOR

Scanners debut album ‘Violence Is Golden’, which came out on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records, got glowing reviews from the press on its release in 2006 and the London four-piece have been making considerably bigger waves over in the States ever since.

The always self conscious UK indie kids have largely been ignoring great homegrown talent like Scanners, in favour of following the herd and getting down to anything with skinny jeans and a haircut banging out sub-pub rock drivel.

Hopefully this will change with the new single ‘Raw’ which was released yesterday and is a great bit of low slung, retro rolling rock. It comes backed by a jumpy Blamma Blamma remix (here) and this bass heavy reworking by London’s STDJ’s.

In what’s a busy time release wise for Scanners, Dim Mak have also just put out the ‘Bombs Remixes’ Ep which features a nice reworking by A-Trak, as well as this great mix from Los Angeles duo Young Americans.  That’s then followed on November 16th by the ‘Lowlife Remixes’ which features some more hotness from LA Riots.

AIRTIGHT ALIBI

You might have heard about NME favourites Cobra Dukes.  The London based Australian sytnth-rockers are signed to Prestel Records, which is Mylo’s Breastfed records partner Kevin McKay’s label.

The band received some blog love with their previous single ‘Leave The Light On’ and they’re back with the more dancefloor orientated ‘Airtight’ which is a smooth workout that’s been described as ‘The Glitter Band on E’. JD Twitch turns things up with some angular synth action and if you like what you hear support it by putting your hard earned into the usual places.
