GOLD DIAMOND

31 03 2008

sam_sparro-8.jpg

The Sam Sparro track ‘Black And Gold’ is going to be big and it already went orbital on the strength of remix downloads before the official release. There are some tasty reworkings for your ears, but this Phones mix was always going to be the winner.

mp3: sam sparro - black and gold (phones hard as diamonds remix).

BLAZIN ICE

31 03 2008

The new video for the Ghislain Poirier track ‘Blazin’, featuring Face T, has a sizzlin’ Ice Hockey theme. Which is something you don’t see very often.

YOU BELONG

31 03 2008

herc.jpg

Yes hipsters, this Riton remix of the next single from Andrew Butlers disco project Hercules and Love Affair popped into the inbox today and it’s an excellent retro tinged type workout.

The release also comes with remixes from Kevin Saunderson and MK and it’s out May 19th on DFA, followed by a string of UK dates at the end of May/beginning of June.

mp3: hercules and love affair - you belong (riton remix).

Duck Down will be dropping one of the most anticipated hip hop albums of the year on April 29th when the second collaboration between 9th Wonder & Buckshot hits the racks. This smooth taster features Talib Kweli and Tyler Woods.

mp3: buckshot & 9th wonder ft. talib kweli & tyler woods - hold it down.

NEOTERIC MIX

29 03 2008

neo_small.jpg

After the recent diversion it’s time to get back to the noise with some quality heaviness from Vancouver’s Neoteric. This mix moves along really well and has most of the recent bangers.

NYLON SCIENCE

portishead.jpg

So, the new album ‘Third’ from Portishead isn’t out until April 14th but you wouldn’t know it because it’s everywhere already. Here’s a great remix by Scienticians, who are DJ Local Hero and Angel Alanis from Chicago’s Noise/Floor crew.

mp3: portishead - nylon smile (the scienticians remix v2).

DIFFERENT STORY

28 03 2008

freestylers2.jpg

While new rave was busy posing and getting it’s hair backcombed last year, Freestylers dropped an unbelievably good mix in the shape of ‘A Different Story Volume 1′.

Inspired by a request for a five minute mix on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show, the release is basically a collection of their favourite classic electro/hardcore tunes, edited and spliced together with their own samples, acapellas and production.

They wanted to deliver something that would appeal to all dance music lovers and not just ‘breakbeat heads’, and it’s safe to say they did that. There’s also nice bonus disc full of unmixed Freestylers interpretations from which this Altern8 reworking is taken.

mp3: altern8/infiltrate 202 - freestlyers.

THE GIRLS GO

28 03 2008

menwithout1.jpg

Men Without Pants is Russell Simmins (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) and Dan The Automator (Dr. Octogan, Gorillaz) and, as you’d expect from the two heavyweights, their combined efforts have resulted in an album full of kick-ass beat driven rock songs with pop and rock influences.

The eponymous album has been floating around digitally since late last year, these type of things tend to happen, but it gets an official release on May 13th. From it here’s a debauched Stooges like cut that’s guaranteed to rock your socks.

mp3: men without pants - and the girls go.

VAN POISON

28 03 2008

martinatop1.jpg

Martina Topley Bird came to people’s attention through her work on Tricky’s seminal album ‘Maxinquaye’, who’s working with Switch on new material apparently.

The next single from her ‘The Blue God’ album is ‘Poison’ and it’s all about the bitterness you feel at the end of a relationship. Out May 5th here’s a low bitrate hypnotic psyche-house remix from Van She.

mp3: martina topley bird - poison (van she remix).

HOLLYWOOD SQUARE

28 03 2008

Here’s something messed up from new Big Dada signing Kail that’s got a warped old sega 8-bit groove going on. Taken from the album ‘Hollywood Squares’, check out more Kail at his myspace page That’s The Sexy Shit.

mp3: kail - wendy.

NEW BEEZ

27 03 2008

bbeez.jpg

Excuse the pedantry and I know everyone goes ‘down’ to the Brazilian city, but from Australia is that strictly true? The latest single from Bumblebeez nicely titled album ‘Prince Umberto And The Sister Of Ill’ is out and Modular have called in some big names for the remixes in the form of Herve, Crookers, and Etienne De Crecy.

mp3: bumblebeez - rio

FROTHY COFFEE

27 03 2008

knux.jpg

More quality Knuxness, this joint is like Outkast jamming with The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, when they had soul. ‘Cappucino’ has been mentioned here before, but this remix features Al and Krispy dropping some tight new ryhming over a new beat.

mp3: the knux - cappucino (remix).

DREAM BIG

It’s been a little loud around here lately so here’s a diversion into laid back cool courtesy of Brooklyn multi-instumentalist Alan Wilkis. His self produced/self released debut album ‘Babies Dream Big’ is out now and it’s a highly recommended genre crossing journey through white boy soul, R&B, classic rock, and electronic music of the the seventies and eighties.

The album takes elements of everything that was good from that time and puts it together into a feelgood mix that sounds fresh, think Hall & Oates or Stevie Wonder playing with Kraftwerk and Boston and you won’t go far wrong. Get the album here.

mp3: alan wilkis - it’s been great.
mp3: alan wilkis - milk and cookies.

GALACTIC GHOSTS

27 03 2008

bghost.jpg

London duo The Black Ghosts, aka ex-Simain vocalist Simon Lord and Wiseguy Theo Keating, have been bubbling along for a while now getting plenty of deserved critical acclaim, and they digitally released one of the years best (already) mixtapes a couple of weeks back on Southern Fried Records.

After a steady series of low profile white label’s they’re gearing up for a debut album which is out this coming July on IAMSOUND and ‘08 should prove to be a big year for the duo.

‘The Black Ghost Mixtape’ essentially acts as an introduction to The Ghost’s and you should beg, steal, or borrow it, although buying it would obviously be more helpful. From it, here’s a bootleg which mixes ‘I Feel Space’ by Lindstrom with the vocal from their own track ’Something New’.

mp3: the black ghosts - something new (galactic version).
